- Sizes other than the square post are labelled common, not official, until confirmed in Instagram's help pages.
Questions
How do I post a whole photo on Instagram without it being cropped?
Pad it: the photo is fitted inside the post's shape with nothing cut, and the leftover area is filled with a colour or a blurred copy of the photo. The panel says how many pixels of padding were added, and the receipt records it as added area.
What size is an Instagram post?
Instagram's own help page says photos are uploaded at up to 1080 × 1080 pixels for a square post. 1080 × 1350 (4:5 portrait), 1080 × 566 (landscape) and 1080 × 1920 (stories and reels) are widely used sizes and are labelled “common” here because they were not confirmed in Instagram's help text when checked.
Pad, fill or fit — which should I choose?
Pad keeps the whole picture at the exact post size. Fill and crop uses the whole post for picture and loses a strip; move the placement sliders to choose which. Fit inside keeps the whole picture at its own shape and lets Instagram decide what to do with it.
Will Instagram compress it again?
Yes, Instagram re-encodes every upload. Giving it exactly 1080 px wide means it does not have to resample as well, which is the part of the loss you can avoid.
