Resize an image to a KB limit

Get your photo under the KB limit

Type the limit, like 50 KB or 200 KB. We keep it looking as good as possible and show the final size.

What a limit means in bytes

The strict reading at each end
LimitAs a ceiling (≤)As a floor (≥)
20 KB20,000 bytes20,480 bytes
50 KB50,000 bytes51,200 bytes
100 KB100,000 bytes102,400 bytes
200 KB200,000 bytes204,800 bytes
500 KB500,000 bytes512,000 bytes

The file checked is the file saved — after the resolution tag and any carried colour profile are written — so the last few hundred bytes of metadata cannot push it over.

Limits

  • Quality never goes below 0.40 here; below that, JPEG blocks show at normal viewing size. The pixel count is the next lever.
  • A KB limit is not a quality promise: a busy photograph at 50 KB will look worse than a plain one.

Questions

How does it get a file under 100 KB?

By encoding the real file again and again. Quality is searched first, by halving the interval between the current setting and 0.40, because quality costs no pixels. Only if 0.40 is still too large — and only if “allow fewer pixels” is on — does the picture come down in 5 % steps, each re-rendered through the same kernel, with quality searched again at each step.

What does the page report?

Exactly what moved: for example “quality 0.78, pixels unchanged” or “quality 0.60 and ×0.90 (1728 × 1152)”. The byte count of the saved file is read back and printed beside the KB figure, with its SHA-256.

Is a KB 1000 or 1024 bytes?

A ceiling is read as 1000 bytes per KB and a floor as 1024, the strict reading at each end, so the file passes whichever one the receiving system uses.

Why can't a PNG be made smaller with quality?

PNG is lossless: it has no quality setting. Only the pixel count can move, which costs far more detail than JPEG compression would. Write JPEG (or WebP) when a size limit is the goal.

Can it make a file bigger to reach a minimum?

It raises quality toward 1.00 to clear a floor. If the file still falls short — a small, plain picture compresses very well — the page says so in figures rather than padding it with bytes that carry no image.
